Garden #1

Garden #1

Spring is here! Colour is returning after the long grey of winter, there have even been some patches of blue sky and – Omg! – sunshine! 🌞

I spent a nourishing day in the garden this week, and really feel energy to get working on The Garden Project. It’s going to be a lot of work but this year I aim to have our raised bed jungle back under control!

Last summer I got most of the St John’s Wort out of the first section. Now the weather has improved I went to the garden centre to pick up a few plants to put in the bare space.

I used to hate being dragged to the garden centre as a kid, but now it fills me with a giddy joy and I get overwhelmed with the exciting possibilities!

There are so many cool plants out there!

I am still very much a novice so I don’t have much confidence in selecting the right plants, but if I spend too much time researching I’ll never get anything done, I’ve just got to go for it and if it doesn’t work out I can hopefully just move things to a better spot.

I got a camellia that I hope will be happy and eventually fill the spot, and a few other small perennials. While we wait for those to grow I’ll fill the spaces with some annual bedding.

I have some seeds I’m raising indoors, and I’ll pick up some cheaper baby plants when they’re available.

Turns out camellias need a big hole for planting and an entire bag of ericaceous compost! The ground is still wet and soft so that wasn’t too arduous and I had a little robin friend watching me dig up a worm buffet.

He got so close!

I actually had forgotten what hard work it can be planting, what with all the digging holes and lugging around compost and mulch! It was quite a work out.

I was absolutely knackered by the end, but feeling restored in my soul and definitely cheered up by the cute little violas adding some much needed colour.

I keep standing at the window looking out at them!

Next I have a lot of chopping back and digging up ivy to get going with. The rest of the raised beds are basically 90% ivy with a few blackberry brambles in there for good measure.

As soon as our garden waste collection starts up again the bin will be filled!

  1. I have a lot of work that need to be done for my garden. Until I get my garden boxes built three lavender plants and some seedlings are waiting in my greenhouse.

That sounds exciting! I love lavender, I have some on our front drive and in a pot. I forgot to cut it back last summer, missed the boat and now it’s looking a little scraggly and leggy.

I really need to start some more seedlings, March has melted away already and it’s getting a bit late for some I wanted to do.
