3 songs I can’t hear without having to revisit the silly version

I was thinking about this today at work after number three came on my Spotify playlist. There might be more but these are definitely the three that come up most often and give me a silly little giggle.

King of Wishful Thinking by Go West

Jimmy Fallon and Paul Rudd ruined this for me. In a skit for the Tonight Show they recreated the music video shot for shot, with Paul taking the lead and bobbing around, enthusiastically Dad dancing like Peter Cox does in the original.

It’s a catchy song (from Pretty Woman) and Smooth Radio seem to like to play it a lot, and every time I hear it I think about Paul Rudd and want to rewatch this video!

They did the same thing with You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) by Dead or Alive but it hasn’t lived in my head as much as King of Wishful Thinking has! (Perhaps because Pete Burns is just too iconic to be surpassed!).

Love Is All Around by Wet Wet Wet

Love Actually ruined this one. In the movie Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) memorably releases a Christmas version of this song “Christmas Is All Around” which is just so stupid, and the wrong number of syllables in the chorus that makes so much more fun to sing along.

Everything about the music video is amazing. Bill Nighy giving it full Mick Jagger swag, the bored looking women clearly not playing instruments, the lip licking, the fake snow.

Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová

I love The Last Man on Earth. I love Will Forte in it especially, but it really has ruined this song forever as Tandy and Mike’s favourite karaoke track. It was this song that came in my playlist today that inspired this post.

It appears in multiple episodes, but one of my favourite videos on the entire internet is Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis performing it live something called THUNGERGONG! 2021.

It’s so stupid, they are clearly having a lot of fun and I love it. I can never just watch this once.

I already stopped to watch it three times just writing this!

Spread the love
