It is very rare that I need to do this, I’m good at knowing my own taste. Usually if  a book got this rating I’d made a miscalculation when I picked it up! I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.

3 Stars

3 out of 5 star book reviews.

These are middle-of-the-road books. Nothing that got me excited, but they were fine and I probably had a good time reading most of it.

I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.

False Value by Ben Aaronovitch 3/5 stars I am done with this series now. This is book eight, and I realise there has been a startling lack of character growth, and it’s just never going to give me what I want.

I'm done with this series - ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 Stars

Retreat by Kyrsten Ritter 3/5 stars A campy thriller following a con-woman stealing the identity of a rich lady in an exclusive Mexican resort. I thought this was a lot of fun, with plenty of twists and a fast pace. Good for a popcorn read!

A campy thriller, entertaining as an easy 'popcorn' read! ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5

Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch 3/5 stars The climax to The Faceless Man plot was a disappointing muddle of too many ideas. There are far too many characters in this book, and The Folly is feeling overcrowded. I think I’m almost ready to call it quits.

The series has become overstuffed, overcrowded with characters and I'm losing patience with it. - ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5

Role Playing by Cathy Yardley 3.5/5 stars This was a cute, later-in-life romance between two 50ish-year-olds. I liked the representation for demisexuals, and while I loved Aiden, I was less keen on Maggie. The overall story is servicable, and there is little character depth.

⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 Stars - Sci-fi element was nothing but gimmick, a forgettable coming of age story with nothing new to say.

foxglove summer by ben aaronovitch 3/5 stars I didn’t love this one. While it does add some much-needed lore (what happened at Ettersberg!), the series arc treads water. The plot was convoluted, with the conclusion vague and rushed. And, unforgivably, no Nightingale!

Unfortunately book 5 leans back into the elements I don't enjoy in this series, and without the ones I do! - ⭐⭐⭐ 3/4 Stars

Persepolis Rising by James S.A. Corey 3.5/5 stars The beginning of the final arc for the series. This was all set up with a plot that didn’t pull me along. I’m hoping the final two books have the payoff for this one. Also, I found the 30-year time jump very distracting!

Better than Babylon's Ashes, but it's all set up for the final arc of the series, and I never felt pulled along by the plot. ⭐⭐⭐ 3.5/5 Stars

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte 3.5 stars I didn’t love this as much re-reading it as an adult (on audio) as I did the first time as a teenager! Rochester sucks. The “romance” is creepy, and very convenient plot developments lost me towards the end.

She's a Killer by Kierston MxDougall 3/5 pineapples The cli-fi, dystopic New Zealand setting was disturbingly plausible and it is darkly funny too, but I found it had just nothing to say in the end. Just like Alice’s IQ, I felt like it wasted it’s potential!
