Mini Review | Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 A well plotted mystery packed with sharp observations on family dynamics and life’s many little disappointments.

Format: Audio (BorrowBox)

Read: April 2023

An enjoyable audiobook (I always love to listen to an Aussie) packed full of wonderful, relatable observations and insights on family dysfunctions, and the many small disappointments that can build up over a lifetime.

It just dragged on way past where I felt the story naturally ended, which was once the central mystery was resolved. It felt like the final section about the pandemic was entirely unnecessary and just tagged on the end just to be topical.

I really liked how the perspective switched between characters both inside and outside the family, zooming in and zooming out of the story to examine how characters viewed by others, and themselves.

The audiobook was well narrated for the Australian characters but the accents for an Irish and (I think) English character were rough. The Irish was really painful! Thankfully that’s only one chapter, and don’t let it put you off!
