It has been a beautiful day today! The weather stayed mostly sun and warm so I ended up spending all day out in the garden doing some more digging!
I actually did the same last weekend but I never got around to posting anything because I was so worn out!
Last weekend my main project was to divide this massive fern we have that’s just gotten way too big, and had the additional issue of the ivy, brambles and St Johns Wort that somehow managed to grow up through the middle of it!

This turned out to be quite the task! The space was not cutting it so I ended up using my pruning saw to get through the rhizome, but even then getting up the heavy lump up and the mass of small roots was hard work!

While I was working on this my partner got the lawns cut at long last! We usually use a mechanical push mower but given the extremity of the situation we borrowed a friend’s electric one! Even then it was quite the job!
The lawn looks so much neater now! Hopefully now it’ll be able to dry out better as it’s been so boggy recently.

We gave it a second cut today too, hopefully now we can keep more on top of it.
Today I did a lot more digging out St John’s Wort and ivy roots! Not particularly exciting.
My little friend was back! I was talking to my neighbour over the fence and he hangs out with her in the garden too!

I have realised that the massive shrub we have in the corner of the garden is either a mature ivy in it’s adult form (tree like) or grown all over something else.. hard to tell at the moment but either way it’s fucking huge and needs cutting back. There are at least 3 prettier flowering shrubs somewhere in that mess.

The whole back section is posing a problem. It’s hard to get under things back there because of the holly tree and the rhododendron… I’d be tempted to leave it as is if not for the amount of bloody brambles! And some of them are, again, fucking massive! I’m talking 2cm stemmed beasts tucked back in there.
I’d rather dig out as much as I can, I’m not just sure how I’m going to get in there to do that!
There is still so much work to do, but I am encouraged by the surprise plants are springing up this year now they have space to! We have lots of forget-me-knots everywhere. They’re such sweet little flowers (see featured image).
I have tried not to hurt the mystery bulbs that have sprung up but some of their delicate leaves are unfortunately collateral damage in my effort get all the creeping weeds out!
