      • 1 Star/Did Not Finish1 Star reads and books I didn’t finish. I use this for books I couldn’t finish. If I finished a book, it meant it was passable at least so deserves an extra star! It is very rare that I need to do this, I’m good at knowing my own taste. Usually if  a book got this rating I’d made a miscalculation when I picked it up! I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.
      • 2 Stars2 out of 5 star  book reviews. I finished the book but it felt like a struggle, and I probably ended up skim reading a lot of it just to get though the thing. I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.
      • 3 Stars3 out of 5 star book reviews. These are middle-of-the-road books. Nothing that got me excited, but they were fine and I probably had a good time reading most of it. I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.
      • 4 Stars4 out of 5 star book reviews. I had a good time reading it, I felt like I got something out of the experience and I’d recommend it to other people. I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.
      • 5 Stars5 out of 5 star book reviews. I got super excited about it! I’ll buy a hard copy for my library, and I’ll likely read it again. Sometimes for these books, I’ll write up a longer review with analysis. I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.

This was going to just be a book review for Paris: The Memoir, but I have much bigger thoughts and feelings.

Good Behaviour by Molly Keane. 3/5 stars. Genre: Classics, Family Saga, Historical Positives: + Masterfully written with sharp characters. + Niave, unreliable narrator reveals in what she observes but fails to understand. + Darkly Funny. + Captures the dying class of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy. Negatives: - The reader is always held at arms length and any sympathy for Aroon is short lived. - Became rather miserable reading after a while!

The Last Train Home By Elle Cook 3/5 stars Genre: Romance Positives: + Easy read, short bingeable chapters. + Reasons for “the timing never being right” were understandable. + A little deeper than your average romance, touches on trauma. Negatives: - Everything involves alcohol! - Partners who are too conveniently unsympathetic to the reader. - Bored by babies in the last 20%. - Ultimately forgettable characters.

Pretend I'm Dead by Jen Beagin Genre: New Adult, Humour Positives: + Mona has a very distinct voice even with third person perspective. + Her life feels messy, real & lived in. + Supporting cast of oddballs. + Frequently funny. Negatives: - Starts strong but loses focus. - Definitely not for the easily offended (warnings for a little bit of everything offensive!). - Something was missing. I never felt really connected or invested in Mona’s fate.

Paris: The Memoir by Paris Hilton 4/5 Stars Genre: Celebrity Memoir, Trauma Positives: + Written with Paris’s true voice, to emulate her ADHD brain. + Powerfully shares her personal trauma and PTSD in the “troubled teen” industry. + Connects the dots between the character ‘Paris Hilton’ and the real Paris. + I can’t stop thinking about it. + Great on audio! Negatives: - I found the abuse difficult to listen to at times. - She apparently loves NFTs! - Skirts around much of her past dumb/offensive actions.

Run, Rose, Run by Dolly Parton and James Patterson 3/5 stars books review Genre: Mystery Thriller, Music Positives: + Ruthanna, the obviously Dolly character, is interesting. + Short chapters make it easier to get through. Negatives: - Annoying Mary Sue protagonist that everything comes so easy to. - She makes many incomprehensible choices. - A Star is Born without the interesting bits. -Tacked on unimaginative mystery thriller element that is never given satisfying resolution.

Several People Are Typing by Carl Kasulke 4/5 stars Genre: Humour, Workplace Positives: + Ridiculous, unconventional, and funny! + Told in the format of workplace messenger chat makes it a quick read! + Weird in the best way. + Sneaks in a surprisingly cute romance too. - Still no idea what was happening but I‘m happy about that! Negatives: - You can’t achieve much depth with such a short format.

1984 by George Orwell 4/5 stars Genre: Classic Literature, Dystopic Positives: + Brilliantly read by Stephen Fry! + Remains as relevant as ever. + Provides much fuel for thought as a warning against allowing too much government control over daily life. Negatives: - Weak characterisation. - Political thesis in the middle section kills all momentum in the plot.
