      • 1 Star/Did Not Finish1 Star reads and books I didn’t finish. I use this for books I couldn’t finish. If I finished a book, it meant it was passable at least so deserves an extra star! It is very rare that I need to do this, I’m good at knowing my own taste. Usually if  a book got this rating I’d made a miscalculation when I picked it up! I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.
      • 2 Stars2 out of 5 star  book reviews. I finished the book but it felt like a struggle, and I probably ended up skim reading a lot of it just to get though the thing. I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.
      • 3 Stars3 out of 5 star book reviews. These are middle-of-the-road books. Nothing that got me excited, but they were fine and I probably had a good time reading most of it. I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.
      • 4 Stars4 out of 5 star book reviews. I had a good time reading it, I felt like I got something out of the experience and I’d recommend it to other people. I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.
      • 5 Stars5 out of 5 star book reviews. I got super excited about it! I’ll buy a hard copy for my library, and I’ll likely read it again. Sometimes for these books, I’ll write up a longer review with analysis. I have a whole post about how I rate books and my reading preferences.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab Mini review 3 of 5 stars Genre: Fantasy, Contemporary Positives: + A great concept. + Great author, even if this is not her best work IMO. Negatives: - Too long, plot really treads water. - Flat characters. I was fed up with both Addie (petulant, bland) and Henry (whiny, dull). - No earned character growth for either. - Predictable ending. - Style over substance. - So much wasted potential for a true epic!

Whiny juvenile characters and predictable to the end, this felt like a huge waste of potential for what could have been an epic. Disappointing and forgettable! ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 Stars

This Is How You Lose The Time War by By Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone Mini review 2 of 5 stars Genre: Sci-Fi, Contemporary Literature Positives: + Cool premise. + Cool characters. + Only 200 pages... Negatives: - Writing style is too poetic for me. - Between language, structure and lack of world building I found the story hard to follow. - I wasnt engaged with the characters or the romance.

Huge disappointment! Overwritten, hard to follow and and mawkish romance. All style and no substance. ⭐⭐ 2/5 Stars

Poison Study by Maria V. Synder Mini review 4 of 5 stars Genre: Fantasy Positives: + Addictive reading. + Great female main character with agency. + Well developed characters. + Miles better than the comparable Throne of Glass! + Tropes but didn’t feel stale. Negatives: - Romance felt like an afterthought which was a waste of potential! -Traumatic backstory has SA which I never like to read. - Main character is a bit too amazing at everything!

Yelena is a great main character, typical fantasy plot but it doesn't feel tired. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

The Mignight Library by Matt Haig Mini review 4 of 5 stars Genre: Fantasy, Contemporary Positives: + Straightforward, accessible writing style. + Characters felt realistic. + A realistic look at depression that aims to be inspiring. Negatives: - very heavy-handed with its message! - Predictable & unoriginal. - The amazing, multi-talented Nora got grating. - You need to be in the right frame of mind, maybe avoid if currently in a depression.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Wier Mini Review 4 of 5 stars Genre: Sci-Fi Positives: + Entertaining, Easy reading. + Plot is packed with twists and turns that keep things interesting. I won’t say more to avoid spoilers! Negatives: - Way too much hard science for me. - I found the main character a little grating. - All characters either share the same personality or are a thin stereotype.
