Reading Roundup: October 2026

Reading Roundup: October 2026

October was heavy on audiobooks but light on print reading.

October was a bit rough. I spent a lot of it feeling poorly, and then BST ended, and I was hit with the period of adjustment where it just feels dark all the time (I hate it when it’s dark by 5pm!). Consequently, I wasn’t in a good reading headspace, not for print anyway – I did get through a lot of audiobooks while not feeling well!

4 audiobooks and one print

This was aprox. 240 pages and 57 hours (of finished books).

Gormenghast (Gormenghast #2) by Mervyn Peake ⭐⭐⭐⭐

l loved it, the second book might be better than the first? It has more memorable moments for me anyway.

And then the final book in the trilogy –

Titus Alone (Gormenghast #3) by Mervyn Peake ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It was a bit different; it took some adjusting, but I found it interesting in a different way! I’m still hyped up to re-read the whole series next year.

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am 18 years late to this, but I was OBSESSED with this. I could hardly stop the audiobook… It got me through my days in bed with a horrible cold. I knew people said it’s good, but I didn’t realise it’s ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD… even when you’re 38 years old and a bit of a literary snob! I just got my reserved copy of the second book through, and I can’t wait.

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke ⭐⭐

I ended up listening to the audiobook for this while I was waiting for Catching Fire, I saw it was available and thought, why not? I could listen to it and find out if it might be worth reading in print.

It’s not worth reading in print; it was barely worth listening to. It’s fine as a beachy, easy-to-read thriller… it completely fails – IMO – as a satire or literary fiction, which is how I have seen it marketed! I am amazed at how well the author sold this book given how incredibly lazy and sloppily written it is.

A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny 🎃🎃🎃

This was a fun buddy read with Husband! A chapter a day did make it a bit difficult to follow, but it was a bit of Halloweeny fun.

Marvel Unlimited

I didn’t read any comics again, and I do feel a bit sad about that.

Currently Reading

Still VERY I’m slowly getting through The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter, I’ve not been reading this for weeks to be honest. I am enjoying it (well… might not be the right word given what it is!), but I’ve just not had the bandwidth for it. I’m hoping not to get ill in November to get back into the reading zone.

I’m almost finished with the audiobook of The Sundial by Shirley Jackson, which is a real delight! And it’s finally my turn with Catching Fire!

Adding to TBR

A no-buy month!

In other news, I’m now on Bluesky, getting a feel for whether there is much action on the #BookSky – it’s very quiet over there, but I don’t mind it!
